Don Ray Sorensen, 88, left this world peacefully on February 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Fillmore, Utah. Don was born on December 2, 1937, at his home in Fayette, Utah. He is the son of Earnest J. and Rachel Mellor Sorensen. He grew up in Fayette, Utah, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep love for his family. After graduating from Gunnison High School, he pursued a career in carpentry and home construction. He dedicated himself to installing garage doors for the next 45+ years throughout Utah.
During Don’s high school years, he felt like he gained more insight by skipping school to ride his horse in the mountains, and he returned when school was out, having finished his chores before his parents came home from work. To which he instilled in his children the importance of attending school and having a good work ethic.
In October of 1958, while bumming around with friends, Don looked in his rearview mirror and saw an angel named Alice Loraine Christensen sitting in the back seat of his car. He later stated that she had a glow about her and knew she was the one. When he proposed, he took her to a little spot between Levan and Fayette, UT and asked if she would be the mother of his children. Don and Alice eloped on September 14, 1959, in Ely, Nevada, and were later sealed in the Manti Temple on July 27, 1963. He was a loving husband to Alice for 66 years, and they raised six beautiful children together. He was a devoted husband and father, always there to offer guidance, love, and a good joke for everyone (sometimes not proper and possibly not repeatable in mixed company), and his presence at holidays and celebrations brought warmth and joy to those around him.
Don had many passions in life, among them riding horses, exploring the desert, working with youth, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, farming, and working with his hands. He was known for his craftsmanship, jokes, pranks, throwing his voice, scouting, whittling, and never meeting a stranger. Don always had a twinkle in his eyes and a sense of humor that would light up a room.
Don had many callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which included working in the nursery, with the Young Men, working in the Family History Library, Second Counselor in the Bishopric, and his most treasured calling as Scout Master. One of his biggest accomplishments in genealogy was entering over 10,000 names into the temple and exploring his and his wife’s family history.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ardella Sorensen and Helen Taylor, a brother, LeRoy Sorensen, a grandson, Alex Mooney, and a great-grandson, Justin Wilcox, as well as many family and close friends.
Don will be missed by his loving wife, Alice, his six children Marjorie (Mark) Fullmer of Fillmore, UT, Susan (Curtis) Wilcox of Fillmore, Ut, Judy (Ronald) Mooney of Hinkley, UT, Michael (Mandy) Sorensen of Fillmore, UT, Diane (Timothy) Forrest, Monticello, AR and Nancy (Robert) Elvin of Fillmore, UT, as well as 21 grandchildren, and 33 great grandchildren with 5 more on the way, as well as many family members and friends who miss him dearly.
Funeral Service will be held Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Fillmore Stake Center (25 South 300 West, Fillmore, UT). The viewing will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and on Saturday, prior to the funeral, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am.
