Kanosh, Utah- Edward DuWayne Carroll passed away February 12, 2024 at Long Beach, CA while visiting family and friends. He was born February 4, 1925 to Giles and Reta Carroll. He married Alice Jane Penney of Kanosh Utah, and they were married 73 years until her passing.
Ed (aka DuWayne, Woody) was raised in Fillmore, Utah before joining the U.S. Navy at age 16 (he told a white lie that he was 17 to be allowed to enlist.) He was stationed in Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 when it was attacked. He has many stories and experiences of the bravery of the men and women who served there. Over his 4 years in the U.S. Navy, he served as a pilot and flew many missions during WWII. At one point he was missing at sea with 22 of his fellow servicemen until they were found 3 days later. They had one small raft that fit two people, and they took turns using it. Ed had just turned 99 years old and celebrated his birthday in his favorite casino in Mesquite, followed by a road trip to Long Beach, CA.
After the war, Ed and Alice moved to Long Beach, CA near the Navy base. Ed worked as a mechanic, a truck driver, and a business owner/operator over the next 54 years until he retired and returned to live in Kanosh Utah over 20 years ago. He and Alice had 5 children and lived a wonderful life together, with many adventures. They have 12 grandchildren and multiple great grandchildren.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; children Sherill, Eddie, and Susan; siblings Ralph, Maria, Gwen, Ross, Thomas, Vance, and Lura; and parents Giles and Reta.
Ed is survived by his siblings, Beth, Carla, and Lee; children, Penne, son-in-law George, and Pati; grandchildren Tim, Kasie, Jim, Kevin, Lily, Jeff, Shayla, Bree, Michael, Craig, April, Jacob. Ed also has a very large family of nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, cousins, etc. to carry on his love for life.
