Obituary

Listen to Obituary

After a long and beautiful life devoted to her family, church, friends, and community, our beloved mother and grandmother, NaDean Oldroyd Beckstrand, returned home on October 15th, surrounded by all of her children. She was reunited with her sweetheart, Harold, her three daughters, and many other cherished family members and friends.

NaDean was born on January 17, 1931, in Venice, Utah, to Harold Oldroyd and Ruby Winget. She grew up on the family farm in Venice with her two sisters and brother. After graduating from Richfield High School, she attended college in Cedar City.

While still in high school, NaDean was set up on a blind date with her future husband, Harold Beckstrand. When Harold left to serve a mission in South Africa, they continued their courtship through letters. He returned home with a diamond wrapped in a handkerchief, and the two were married on June 30, 1950 in the Manti temple. Together, they established their home in Meadow, Utah, where they raised their children and shared 70 wonderful years in the same home.

NaDean's most treasured roles in life were those of wife and mother. She had a remarkable gift for making a house a home and excelled at gardening, canning, baking, sewing, and quilting. She loved to sing and remained a member of the ward choir well into her 80s. She also enjoyed swimming every morning, and many will fondly remember her tradition of diving off the diving board on her birthday, a feat she continued well into her 80s. Once her children were all in school, NaDean began working as a secretary for the Utah State Extension Service and later worked at Family Services. She faithfully served in numerous ward and stake callings and was a proud member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers (DUP). One of her special joys was serving as Harold's scribe during his time as Stake Patriarch. Together, she and Harold served at Cove Fort Historical Site, attended the temple weekly for many years, and enjoyed visiting Church historical sites and participating in temple tours. Their lives were a testament to their deep faith, devotion to one another, and love of the gospel.

NaDean is survived by her five sons: Robert (Carlene), Hal (Jolynn), Richard (Sheri Kay), Don (Paige), and Jay (Kelli); her foster daughter, Veronica Francisco; 22 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Linford (Mary Louise), and her sister-in-law, Carolyn. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold; her parents; her sisters, Arda (Sherm) Turner and Elva (Con) Hatch; her brother, Hal Oldroyd; her daughter, Marilyn (Kerry) DeVries; her twin infant daughters, Dean and Diane; and her daughter-in-law, Marlene.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Laurel Groves, who loved and cared for NaDean so dearly, and to Ability Home Health and Hospice for their compassionate care and support. NaDean's life was a beautiful example of faith, love, service, and quiet strength. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue through the many generations she nurtured and the countless lives she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
