York Max Shields

Meadow, Utah – York Max Shields, 1953-2019, 65, passed away unexpectedly May 22, 2019, in Fillmore, Utah. He was born September 8, 1953, in Delta, Utah, to Curtis “Mac” Shields and Cherie Dean Hannifin. He married Christi Averett, who passed in 1995, leaving him with five young children. He later married the next love of his life, Sandi.

York was raised in Kanosh, Utah. He graduated from Millard High School and then the Police Academy. He served on the Utah Highway Patrol for 13 years.

York enjoyed rock and wood sculpting, landscaping and carpentry. He was a self-taught jack-of-all-trades and was constantly developing new skills throughout his life. He has been working on new projects at his home in Meadow, with his wife Sandi, and his children, for the last 23 years.

York was a gifted musician, who was continually exploring new instruments, and growing in his skills as a musician daily. York unquestionably loved every moment he spent with his wife, children and grandchildren, and shared his love of music with all of them.

York is survived by his wife, Sandi Shields; five children: Melody Ortiz (Esteban), Jessica Shields, Russell Shields (Lesli), Kory Shields (Beverly), and Brandon Shields (Chantyl). He has 19 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. He has two brothers, Tim Tuttle (Ruth Ann) and Dean Shields (Kris), and four sisters, Sherie Kay Thueson (Greg), Lana Nielson, Mary Ann Steadman (Kevin) and Claudeen Sutherland. Preceded in death by his mothers, Cherie and Roena; father, Mac; wife, Christi; and two sisters, Norma and Karen.

We went to school with York and grew up in Kanosh, knowing him and his wonderful family. York was always very kind and caring of others. He will always be remembered as a kind and gentle soul.
There are some who bring a light so great to the world, that even after they have gone, the light remains.
May God bless the family with comfort and many loving memories of this special husband, father, brother and friend.

I would have liked to be able to say these things in person, but unfortunately that is not possible. I knew York when he served with the Utah Highway Patrol in the Vernal Section. He was genuinely a kind and gentle person. I enjoyed his friendship and association more than I can say. There was never any animosity or drama with York, he was simply your friend. How I wish I had stayed in touch, I shall always regret that. Sandra, Dean, and other family members, my heart goes out to you. He was one of the best that God blessed our lives with. May God bless you all.

To say to know him was to love him is nowhere even close enough. Truly one of the kindest and most caring Person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. There is so much about York to say yet I do not have the words to explain at all. I just spent two weeks with him on a job and I am so happy for that time. If I would have known that the last time I seen him and he hugged me goodbye that Would be the last time I would ever see him I would have helled on a little longer. There was no quit in York. He looked tired but refused to sit down while working with me. My dad and me will miss him so much every time I drive through on the highway I will think of York and wish that I could stop and say hello. It will definitely not be the same. We love you and we will miss you and someday we will see you again my friend. Monty Morrow
