Mary Haglund

June 21, 1936 ~ August 14, 2020 (age 84)

Obituary

In loving memory of Mary Francine Cox Haglund, lover of

her family, mysteries, and all things Christmas.

Our sweet mother Mary Haglund became our sweet angel mother on August 14, 2020. Mary was born on June 21, 1936 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Kenneth and Mildred Cox.  She spent her formative years in Provo where she graduated High School and enjoyed the single life enhancing her artistic talents through painting and enjoying friends. In 1962 Mary embarked on a new adventure when she moved to California. There our dad, Roger, caught her eye and eventually her heart. They were married on April 9, 1963 in the Manti Temple.

Mary and Roger survived the raising of their six (some extremely challenging) children. They were richly rewarded for their hard work with 30 delightful grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Mary very much loved her family and especially loved those grandchildren.

The business of being a mother and then a full-time working mother didn’t give mom much time for her artwork, but one of her beautiful paintings of some horses hung in our living room for as long as any of us can remember. Mom used her creative talents in other ways, making clothes for us throughout our lives and often handmade gifts such as dolls, quilts, and quiet books for church time. Mary was an incredible baker.  She often baked and sold bread throughout the years.

Mary loved holidays and decorating, especially the Christmas holiday. The entire house was bedecked with tinsel and holly. If you were lucky enough to be in Mary’s “inner circle” you received a loaf of her famous Danish Christmas Bread. Christmas in our house was filled with the wonderful aroma of Christmas bread, homemade candy (Oh that fudge!), Christmas music either on the record player or mom humming, lots of lights, hot cocoa, and much love.

Mom loved to read, and often spent her ‘unwinding from work’ time reading. Her favorites were murder mysteries from Agatha Christie and Mary Higgins Clark (a love she passed on to many of her children). She also loved the ‘Murder She Wrote’ series and many grandchildren have fond memories of watching with Nana.

Mary was an avid family historian. She dedicated many hours of her life to genealogy and worked at LDS Family History centers in both California and Utah. One year for Christmas, Mom gifted all the children with binders of our family history work (before the internet made things so much more convenient). She had even traced one of the family lines back to Adam and Eve. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Mildred, her husband Roger, and her sweet granddaughter Heather.

Mary is survived by her siblings, Genevieve, Norman, LaVar, and Joyce as well as her six children Donna (Fred) of Aurora, UT, Wayne (Joell) of Idaho Falls, ID, Bryan (Crista) of Summerfield, NC, Melissa of Springville, UT, Brent (Rachelle) of Springville, UT, and Paula (Dallin) of Fallon, NV as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many wonderful friends and extended family whom she loved dearly. We love you Mom.
